So I'm running Windows vista home premium 64 bit and I tried to edit
some .avi video files on my windows movie maker but when I tried to edit
the file it gave me a black screen in the preview box and only
recognized it as audio.

Does Windows Movie maker 64 bit not recognize .avi video files or is
there something I can do to fix this like download a patch?

Try converting the .avi files to a compatible format
like .wmv before you import into Movie Maker.

Have a look at the following links:

Movie Maker 2 -
Importing AVI Files

or...

Converting to.wmv with Windows Media Encoder
might be worth a try:

Windows Media Encoder

or...

How do I convert other video file formats to WMV?

Try downloading Divix web player. It will play most of them in WMP.

You need to have the video (and audio) CODEC that was used to encode the
video track in that AVI file installed in your system. There are any number
of CODECs that could have been used, most are proprietary and some are only
available if you buy them. In the way of freeware options you can download
the XviD CODEC which can decode many generic mpeg4 or DivX encoded videos,
or FFDSHOW which can decode AVI or other videos using any of dozens of
different video and audio CODECs.

I've had some good luck with this xillisoft product: 'Xilisoft Video
Converter Platinum - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET
Download.com'
That’s a link to the video converter (I believe it does audio as
well) on CNET’s Download.com.

Anyone else used it to provide some more feedback?

That doesn't help with *encoding* them using Movie Maker - that only
addresses *playback*. =)

Sounds like you have the 32bit codec for that file installed.

What codec does the AVI use? You would want a 64bit version of that. =\
