Moving email msgs from Windows 98 to Vista

I had no trouble moving files, favorites, addresses etc from my old Windows
98 machine to my new Vista system. So I thought I could export/import my
email messages. Outlook Express informed me it could only export to Outlook.
So I installed Outlook and moved them there. Then I exported from Outlook
(onto a flash drive, that's how I moved everything else) and tried to import
into the Vista Mail program. No dice. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
