Moving to new pc

Hi all,

I'm moving from XP to Win7; I'm using WLM for email & usenet & feeds.
I am not signing in to WLive, though I have an ID.

How do I move everything over so the new pc has it all the way it is on the
old on so I don't have to d/l everything again?

Do I just copy over the message store? & if so, into which directory on the
new machine? export & import? or what? (the last big migration I made was OE
to WLM but all on the same machine)

I need a sort of step-by-step instruction set, if possible.
Thanks for help.
bj

Win7's Easy Transfer will step you through the process. Simple as π.

bj, hang on a day or two before attempting this. The methods that have been suggested will only work if you transfer from the XP
version to precisely the same build on W7. If your XP version is outdated or you already have a newer version on W7, they are doomed
to failure. It's my bedtime now, so please wait a bit until I can give you the baby steps to get it right. You risk losing all your
contacts, for one thing...

I started that process. I bailed when the to-be-transferred file-formation
got to an estimated time of 10+ hours & still going up. I'd really rather
not spend 2-3 days making the switch while not being able to do anything
else in the meantime!

Well-intentioned (?) but quite poor advice, seasoned with a dose of
unhelpful fear-mongering.

Windows Easy Transfer will diagnose any differences between systems and
advise you how to make a successful transfer. Of course if you choose to
cobble together your own wrong-headed approach, that is your
prerogative. Pray tell, how is Easy Transfer doomed to failure? Do you
actually have experience with Easy Transfer?

Your effort promoting FUD, suggesting that one risks losing all their
contacts, is sad. Easy Transfer deletes nothing from the XP machine.

Gosh... we're holding our collective breath waiting for your to swoop in
with your baby steps which will save the day. Yeah... let's all wait a
day or two, until your can read up on a "solution' with which you have
no history.

@bj... start here...
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...p-to-windows-7

.... or you can hang around for two days until the self-appointed Geek
Squad arrives with an answer.

I know your pain. It's almost as though starting over would be easier.

KCB's post pointed to the "short cut"... Here's a link to a Microsoft
forum that follows that path... Note the recommendation to update WLM...

Good luck!

Try this on the XP machine: File/Export>Messages... Save to a thumb drive
or whatever you want/CD/DVD, etc...

Then, File/Export>Accounts... Again, save it to wherever you want. (same
location as above)

Regardless if your saved files are bad, the originals are still there, and
these steps can be repeated infinitely.

Get your thumb drive or CD or DVD, or whatever you saved to, and insert it
in the Win7 machine. You should already have installed WLM at this point.
(See Note below*)

Open WLM on the Win7 machine and select File/Import>Messages... Point to the
location of you files which were exported from the XP machine.

Finally, on the Win7 machine, you go to Tools/Accounts, then click the
Import button. Again, you need to point it to the location of the IAF
file(s) that you exported from the XP machine. You need to export/import
each account. That means email accounts and usenet accounts.

You're done.

*One more bit of advice: Don't install WLM 2011 (version 15), but look for
the previous build of WLM 2009 (version 14). You'll be much happier, trust
me.

Holding on may be a good idea.
1. Since the op has not mentioned which version of WLM will be installed on
Win7
2. If one runs the WET wizard on XP to see what it shows in the UI....it
claims it's going to transfer Mail/Messenger, but clicking Advanced doesn't
show the appropriate folders checked.
3. The Windows Live Solution Center is pretty much void of WLM/XP to
WLM/Win7 info for WET.
4. Contacts database location changed from 09 to 11.
5. The bit.ly link to the Answers forum you referenced is full of
inconsistency..The op posted about WLM 08 on XP, one post recommended
upgrading(a good idea but only upgradeable to WLM 09 QFE3 on XP for the op
in that thread); the other response provided a path to Windows Mail(a Vista
client).....and both were marked as 'Answers' ...hardly comforting
6. The Tech Net Article on the USMT (which is the base code for WET)
specifically excludes WLE 2011. (see #2 above)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...01(WS.10).aspx
7. This article claims that WET can be used, but it is based on XP/OE -
Vista/WM with a recommendation to use WET as the backup mechanism but also
void of a WLM to WLM from XP to Win7.

Thus, maybe it does make sense to heed that advice to 'hold on'

In my experience WET works like a charm and with minimum risk; it won't delete anything from the old PC.

Well, he has various possibilities to explore. I used the export/import
quite easily. If I had known just to copy the directories, I would have
done it that way. If he has updated his XP version to 14, then installs 14
on Win7, I don't think he'll have any problems at all. I told him to stay
away from 15 because of it's different menu features, and the fact that it
sucks for UseNet.
