Just started playing with VHD, and would like to know how to move from the
VHD window to the default OS screen without shutting down the VHD. Is this
Possible?

What virtualization product are you using?

With VPC2007, it's just the <right Alt> key if it's not full screen,
<right Alt><Enter> and then just <Right Alt> if it is.

I try not to run anything full screen. I guess I was looking for the way to
move from the VPC window to the Host Machine.

As Bob said, can you please clarify what you mean and what product you are
using... VHD is the default file extension for a virtual hard disk file in
Microsoft Virtual PC - how exactly are you "playing" with it...?

Also, what do you mean by the "default OS"? Do you mean the host machine?

Assuming you're using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, the important thing to
remember is that it's just a piece of software - just an application, like
Word or Excel. The virtual machines are, therefore, analogous to its
"documents" and, as such, don't have to run full screen.

I never run any of my virtual machines full screen, as that seems to
completely defeat the purpose of the ability to run more than one operating
system on the same physical hardware at the same time. If I have two virtual
machines open, it's because I need to see both of them, as well as the
host...

You can do that by using full screen <Right Alt> <Enter> toggles
between full screen and windowed.

You might want to install the VPC additions in your VM, it house mouse
integration so you can move in and out of the VM with the mouse
without using any keyboard shortcuts. (when it's in windowed mode)

It comes with VPC, on the VPC VM window, just pull down the "Action"
menu -> "Install or update Virtual Machine Additions"

This will start a program in the VM to install the additions -- just
follow the prompts.

"I never run any of my virtual machines full screen..."

Some people have more than one monitor.

Indeed, I have 3 monitors, but 99% I run VMs in windows, not
full-screen.

Seems it's a matter of resolution to me. On lower-res monitors, I'll prefer to run
VMs full screen, no matter how many actual screens there may be. I like the VM to
be at least 1280x1024, if possible, which means they run as windows on larger
monitors.
