Currently MediaCenter and Windows Media Player themselves have no support
for MP4 video files. It is however possible to add one of the various third
party codecs (e.g. CoreAVC, or FFDshow) to allow both WMP and MCE to play
such files. This applies to both normal MP4 and MP4 H.264 (aka. AVC, aka.
Advanced Video Codec).
Once again this also applies to both MCE 2005 and Vista MCE, and both WMP 10
and WMP 11.
Regarding a LinkSys or HP MediaCenter Extender, no they will not play back
MP4 video files. Regarding an Xbox MCE (original Xbox) no it will not do MP4
video files, regarding an Xbox 360 MCE, officially no it will not do MP4
video files. See this FAQ
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/m...er/mcefaq.mspx
As you might gather Microsofts support for MPEG4 is not merely poor it is
non existent. Even if you do install a suitable codec you still have many,
many problems. A suitable codec can and does let a MediaCenter computer play
back existing MPEG4 video files but it will NOT let you record in MPEG4, it
will also not let you view LIVE TV that is broadcast in MPEG4, and as
indicated above you cannot use an MCE Extender to view MPEG4 video (live or
even merely existing files).
Now the inability to view live TV that is in MPEG4 format is a particularly
big problem because practically the entire world (except the USA) is or will
be using MPEG4 AVC to transmit HDTV broadcasts, this includes the whole of
Europe for example.
It is also the case that the standard that appears to be winning for both
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is MPEG4 AVC (rather than Microsofts WMV 9). However in
this instance a third party codec might be sufficient to get round the
problem. A HD-DVD or Blu-Ray 'player' has to support both, but it appears
the majority of disks are being made using MPEG4 AVC.
So in summary to answer your specific questions. Yes you will be able to
play back the MP4 files from your CamCorder in MediaCenter (as long as you
install a suitable codec). No you will not be able to play them back via a
MediaCenter Extender.
