MPEG Files incorrectly shown as ‘0 seconds’ in WMP Library

Hi, I am using WMP11 with Windows XP Home SP3. I have generated many video
MPEG files some using Roxio Media Creator others generated by a TV tuner
(DigiTV). WMP info associated with many of the video files automatically
catalogued by the library is correct but several files incorrectly show the
length as ‘0 seconds’. Also when viewing the properties of these files, the
bit rate is not shown. There does not appear to be any logic about which
files have incorrect information – they can be produced by both Roxio EMC and
the TV tuner under apparently identical conditions as other files that are
correctly catalogued. The ‘0 seconds’ files run OK with WMP11 on the
computer. However, the files cannot be accessed by a TV via DLNA and WMP11 as
the server – in fact no files in a folder containing a '0 seconds' file are
‘seen’ by the TV (even those correctly recorded in the WMP11 library).

Also note that when viewing the “0 seconds” files with WMP11 on the computer
the video codec is listed in the properties but not the audio codec nor the
bit rate.

The incorrectly defined files can be removed from the WMP11 library and
sometimes but not always then added back manually (dragging) successfully –
now the correct time and bit rate are shown in properties.

Does anyone have advice on how can get all video files consistently and
correctly listed in the WMP library so that I can then view them on the TV
via DLNA?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for reply.

Yes, the TV Tuner PCI card + USB box (digiTV) are from Nebula; I believe
that you are correct that the software produces videos in MPEG2 transport
stream format. So probably your idea is right that I did not have appropriate
codecs installed to view the files perfectly in WMP.

Interestingly before I read your reply I downloaded and installed VideoLAN
(vlc.exe), which was suggested for showing some video files on the web that I
wanted to view. Since installing VideoLAN I can get all files (I think) to
show correctly in the WMP library i.e. show correct time and also I can play
all the DigiTV recordings on my Bravia TV via DLNA/WMP11. However, some files
produced using Roxio’s Videowave are still not seen by my Bravia TV via
DLNA/WMP11. (Note that many files generated using Roxio’s Videowave are seen
and run on the Bravia TV OK)

I am not able to get full functionality with playing any video files via
DLNA/WMP11 on my Bravia TV – I cannot fast forward or reverse, which is a
frustrating and limits the value of the system.

I investigated using PS3MS v.1.11.356 instead of WMP as a server, because
other Bravia users have found that PS3MS offered a significant improvement
compared to WMP11. All my video files played well with PS3MS; those showing
as “0 seconds” in WMP library (before VideoLAN installed) were transcoded
successfully. But again I could not fast-forward or –reverse, which I
consider as a major drawback (I want to be able to skip adverts in
recordings).

Perhaps WMP12 would offer further improvements but I am not keen to upgrade
to Windows 7 at this stage as I have some useful hardware & software that are
not compliant with Windows 7.

At this stage I have not explored using the Haali media splitter. Do you
think that this is likely to improve the functionality of playing files on
the Bravia TV?

I hesitate to install the Haali media splitter because I am concerned, like
you, that I might have too many codec packs installed that might result in
some conflicts. However, the major reason not to be keen to spend too much
time on this problem is that I already have a way of conveniently viewing
files stored on my PC on the Bravia TV – I use a Pinnacle ShowCenter, and
this has done a good job for the past 4-years.

I wanted to thoroughly evaluate the DLNA functionality of the Bravia but,
for the time being, I have decided to stick with the tried-and-tested
ShowCenter thereby avoiding the hassle of getting the right codecs / media
server for my DLNA system.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

John
