MRU list option clears itself

On Vista Business (32bit), the "Store and display a list of recently opened
files" option for MRU's keeps on clearing itself with no apparent behaviour
template. Hear me, Microsoft ? Told you once, this is the second time, I
thought you'd repair it in the 20 or so patches I've updated the pc with
since March. Or maybe it isn't so big a problem for you.

Hi,

Since it doesn't have this behavior by default, I suspect rather that you
have a policy setting to clear this cache, or that it is being cleared by
whatever system security package you have installed. Check the settings of
that software, as I suspect it to be the most likely cause.

Patches address the most commonly reported problems and security risks.
Yours is the only instance of this problem that I have seen. Not to be
negative, but I suspect it is not a high-priority.

This is caused by some Security Package where MRU is set in the preference to delete on exit. AdAware is one of them as an example. Check your Security packages

Wish it was something that easy (or easily identifiable). I have NO such
programs as AdAware, this behaviour came installed with Vista as I confront
it from the beginning (5 months ago), and I haven't gone around tampering
with security settings, neither.
To be more explicit: I open some documents, their names enter the MRU list
as they should, and when I get bored with that list I proceed to clearing
it, the easy (only ?) way: Right-click on Taskbar, Properties, and so on. I
use the Classic Start Menu and of course that on this setting I've seen the
reported behaviour. After such a cleaning of the MRU list, after [1 or 2 or
3 times going through this procedure], I discover no recent opened document
name in the list, although I've opened the file 5 seconds ago; then, I check
out again the state of the option of storing the list of MRUs and surprise -
the checkbox is unchecked ! For me, this is most annoying, because I work
repeatedly with enough files in a day, that I want to be stored in that
list, that I also clear it repeatedly in the same day.
In a word, the Thing happens somewhere along the way between checking the
option and closing the final dialog of the Taskbar properties (it does not
remain checked). Now, please, Microsoft, would you do something about this ?
It is inconceivable for me that no other user has this problem - I have a
_clean_ Vista Business, not some crack or beta (nor alpha, I hope...) and
_only_ licensed, _release_ products installed and working with (most of them
from Microsoft itself).
P.S. I am by no means a fan of Linux, but Microsoft should consider putting
a more accessible/simple "Clear this MRU list" menu entry right on top of it
_in the Classic Menu_. I do not understand why I have to click my way 7
times, through 2 dialogs, to get this thing done; could this possible change
in the system mean that Vista is more [some Linux]-like ? I do not give a
rat's a** on their wars, just get repaired the MRU list !!!
P.P.S. Just for the kicks, I'll try the Vista Start Menu for a day,
___BUT___ the checkbox seems to dictate both for this style and the Classic
one. I think Microsoft should really look into this.

Hmmm. Are you talking about the Recent that is shown in Start\Documents.

Have you checked your setup. Start\Settings\Start Menu\Customize and see what you have checked off under Recent Documents Menu ???

Yes, I go there about 6 times a day... All checkboxes and radiobuttons that
should be checked regarding this matter I leave checked, only to find
unchecked the checkbox "Store and display a list of recently opened files",
at seemingly random times. I have not found any _consistent_ pattern in my
workflow, onto which this behaviour could possibly superpose.
Thank you anyway Peter, now I can only hope that someone else will replicate
the problem, or someone at Microsoft will look into this... On Vista
Business 32-bit, the option for remembering MRUs ("Store and display a list
of recently opened files") in the Documents list of the Classic Start Menu
goes to unchecked state at (random) times, after checking it and closing the
last Taskbar Properties dialog (so there's no way of telling if the system
retains its checked state until opening again the dialog); as such, the
names of the subsequently opened files are not stored in the MRU list. This
happened, let's say, with only WinZip opened, or working only with Adobe
Reader (that is to say, with no more than 1 complex application having a
user interface).

It seems to be a problem in the Classic Start Menu.
The Start Menu does not pose this issue.
I recommend to Microsoft that they look into the Classic Start Menu, see why
the option clears itself only when using this style.
Good luck !
