Is MS .NET critical update necessary?

Am using WinXP-pro PC. I manually did a Windows 'check for updates' and it
only brought up this one as high priority, recommended. Do I really need
this? Does it hurt anything to (or work poorly if I) go ahead and install
it? What's it really do, I don't think I do anything with MS .NET?
Thanks

---------recommended critical Win Update-------------

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3, English Version

Date last published: 9/2/2004

Download size: 9.6 MB

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3 resolves various issues
found after the initial release of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0. These
include both security- and non-security-related issues. After you install
this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed
this item, it cannot be removed.

Do you already have the NET framework installed? You probably don't need it
at all, let alone the SP for it. Check to see whether it's installed in
add/remove programs. If you do have it, you can probably uninstall it if you
don't need it - or just download the SP via WU so you won't be nagged again.

If you have .Net Framework installed, you need this update.

"George",

..NET framework 1.0 was delivered as part of the Operating System, in Windows
XP and Windows Server 2003. There is no add/remove for this software if you
have it natively. If, however, you installed it on Windows 2000, then there
may be an entry in the Add/Remove Programs within the control panel.

Essentially, I agree with Jupiter Jones...you need this critical update.
More and more programs will be written on the .NET framework, and will
require it to be installed for the program to actually execute. This is
true of programs written in at least 3 languages that use the framework.

Sincerely,

Hi

Ehh, for Windows XP, the .NET framework have never been delivered
as part of the OS .

(and Win2k3 Server comes with .NET Framework 1.1)

I installed .net 1.1 as it is needed for the latest ATI Graphics Cards
'Catalyst Control Centre'. But after installation the display tab of
DXDIAG indicates missing files. Restoring to the pre .net 1.1 state
shows all DirectX files present.

Anyone else experienced this effect on DirectX?
