Error code 0x530 - appears to relate to the Windows Installer
For more information, see KB906323:

I am also experiencing trouble with the office sp2 update, getting the error
0x530. I have checked the version of windows installer and it is 3.1 (v2). As
the update was from the microsoft update center there are no .msi logfiles
created. Any ideas?
Thanks

I recieved the following in an email from Microsoft. I also had a problem
installing SP 2, but never recieved an error code. SP 2 had downloaded, but
was unable to install. In my case, I chose option 3, but feel free to try
any or all of the options mentioned. Also, it would be a good idea to have a
copy of your Office 2003 installation disk available, as it was needed to
load a couple files from the CD during the SP 2 update. Good luck and I hope
this helps.

Dear David,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support. My name is Zhengjian
Yang, and I will be assisting you with this Service Request.

I understand that you can not install Office 2003 SP2 successfully. If I
have misunderstood, please let me know.

Please try below steps to resolve this issue:

Method 1: Manually download and install the Service Pack 2 for Office 2003

===========================================

Please download the Office 2003 SP2 at the following website link and then
install it from the hard disk and see whether it can be installed perfectly.

Office 2003 SP2 update download link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And after opening the page, you can find the link to download the file on
the bottom of the page. There are two files; you can download either of them.
I recommend you download the bigger one
"Office2003SP2-KB887616-FullFile-ENU.exe" as it is the full installation file.

If the installation still failed, please perform the following
troubleshooting steps.

Method 2: Enable Office Source Engine service

==================================

This issue may occur if the Office Source Engine service (OSE.EXE) startup
type is set to "Disabled". By default, the Office Source Engine service
startup type is set to "Manual". Windows Installer uses a custom action to
start the Office Source Engine service. However, Windows Installer cannot
start this service if this service is disabled.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this,
follow these steps:

a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".

b. In the list of services, double-click "Office Source Engine".

c. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

2. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a
setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click
Properties, General tab. And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list,
and then click "OK".

3. Try to install the Office Update packages again.

4. Repeat above steps to enable the "Windows Installer" service again.

If it still failed, please try the Method 3.

Method 3: Disable Local Installation Source

===========================

1. Download the Local Installation Source Tool from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. Extract LisTool.exe and LisTool.chm to some location.

3. Run the GUI tool (LISTOOL.exe) and choose the Disable LIS option. Click
next. Select all the check boxes in the subsequent dialog. Then proceed to
Finish.

4. Try to install it again.

If the problem still persists, please try the Method 4

Method 4: Repair Office 2003

===========

To repair Office using Maintenance Mode Setup, follow these steps:

1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Office 2003 entry listed in the Add/Remove Programs
Properties dialog box.

3. Click Repair Office.

4. Click Repair errors in my Office installation and then click Finish.

NOTE: Select the Restore my shortcuts check box if you are having problems
with your Office shortcuts.

5. If you are still having problems, repeat steps 1-3, and then click
Reinstall Office and click Finish.

If the above step doesn't work, please go on with Method 5.

Method 5: Remove and reinstall Office 2003

======================

Before we start any items in these steps, let’s back up your outlook data so
as to avoid further file loss. For more information on back up your outlook
data please go to the following link:

For Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003:

Q287070 OL2002: How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data

http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;287070

Note: this article also applies to Outlook 2003.

Note: If you don't use Outlook for your emails, just skip this step and move
on.

1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...BD/msicuu2.exe

2. After you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click Start
menu-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.

3. Highlight Microsoft Office 2003 entry in the list and then click Remove.
Quit the Utility.

Note: If you have got any other old or redundant office entries or other
Office stand alone products such as Visio in the list, please remove them
together.

4. Close all applications.

5. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

6. Expand the registry tree on the left pane and locate the following two
registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

7. Right-click on this key and click Delete to delete those keys.

8. Delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.

C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11

9. Click Start menu-> Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

10. Empty the %Temp% folder.

Note: If some files can't be deleted, please skip them, which don’t
influence the result of the troubleshooting.

11. Empty the Recycle Bin.

12. Restart your computer and install Office 2003.

13. Go to Office Product Updates Web site to check for all available updates:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/of...e/default.aspx

Can you install the Office updates now?

Information Collections:

====================

If the problem still persists, I'd like you to capture a screen shot of the
exact error message you have encountered and send it to me as an attachment
for my further research.

To capture the image, please:

(a) When the image appears, press the Print Screen key several times (this
key is located to the right of the F12 key on the keyboard)

Note: Nothing happens at this stage. Please just go ahead.

(b) Open Paint ['start' => 'All Programs' => 'Accessories' => 'Paint'].

(c) Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.

(d) Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a .jpg or .gif file and send it to
me as an attachment.

In addition, please send me your WindowsUpdate.log, you can find it in
c:\windows.

Note: you can follow below steps to show file extension first:

1. Click Start, and click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Folder Options.

3. Click the View tab.

4. Remove the check mark from the "Hide extensions for known file types",
and click OK.

Let me know whether this helps. If you encounter any difficulties or have
any concerns, feel free to let me know. I look forward to your update.

Best regards,

Zhengjian Yang

Check to make sure the necessary services are set to Manual
Click Start, select Run, type: services.msc
click OK
Office Source Engine service - Manual in the Startup Type
Windows Installer Service - Manual in the Startup Type

Otherwise look at repairing/reinstalling Office 2003.
Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office 2003 program that you want to repair, and then click
Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair,
and then click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair
errors in my Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 CD handy.

Detect and Repair has the same problem as the SP2 update, i.e. installation
source unavailable.

Yes, I've tried both the full and part service pack file....no go.

LISTool only runs 50% of the time (comes up with an error). With LISTool
tried enabling, disabling, enabling...still no go. Deleted the MSOCACHE
folder...no go. Tried LISTool again...no go.

The only thing I haven't done is used the Windows Install Cleanup and
deleted my Office 2003 installation.

Why has MS made it so damn hard to do this update? Why has MS released
Installer v3.1 too? It causes so many problems with applications installed
using previous installer versions.

I don't know about you all but I have spent hours, no days, trying to sort
these 2 updates out. Sure, in hindsight it would have been a hell of a lot
quicker deleting my Office installation but I need to know a quick and easy
fix for Office 2003 SP2 and Windows Installer 3.1. Why? Because customers who
I support are aghast when I tell them the only real solution from Microsoft
is to delete their Office installation!

Come on Microsoft! Get it together!

Try installing Office 2003 SP2 via Office Update
(http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/default.aspx). MS sources have
informed at least some of us that it is no longer being offered via
Microsoft Update because of such problems.

YMMV.
