No, sorry, you need 2000 or better. (My 2003 works fine.) If you install 97
you are going to have file system permissions errors that won't let you do
any more than Works would. You are stuck with upgrading to newer Office, or
using Works (or 'open office' shareware, which is, in my opinion, no better
than Works)
Probably your cheapest path is going to be an 'upgrade from 97' copy of
Word. Somewhere around $100 U.S.

No, ms office 97 won't work. Office 2003 or newer is the safest choice if
you want everything to work.
But you could allways try Openoffice 2.4 which is equvalent to ms office
2000/XP in functions.

Suggest you try OpenOffice.org instead. It will probably do all you need -
it's highly compatible with MS Office and imports/exports MS Office file
formats.

Really? Before I dumped Vista for all the other problems it has (I gave
it a month) it ran my '97 Small Business Ed. apps (Word, Excel, Publisher)
with no problems at all. There is an issue with patching up to SR-2, but the
fix
for that is here:

http://bytes.com/forum/thread622173.html

The only "older" app I had trouble with (installed separately) was Outlook
2000, and there's lots of stuff on the 'net you can Google for on ways
around most of the issues there.

Don't give up on '97, later versions add NOTHING of value, just useless
bloat. '97 runs like lightning on newer machines due to it's smaller footprint.

So MS says that you need to buy new software just
to run it on Vista. Big woop. Should that be a surprise
given that they are in the business of selling software ? I know
some of you fanboys here think MS is God, cower
and grovel before them and scrupulously follow their every
directive, but some of us don't.

I'm saying that it runs fine. Go ahead and just stay
inside your MS box and don't think for yourself.

Your choice.

Office 97 runs fine on Vista.
A minor issue with the service packs and the fonts is easily
overcome.

Maria: The term is "I installed it", not "I downloaded it". Downloading implies that you got the
copy off the Internet.
That you cannot do. If you have a copy, on disk or on your drive, then you "install" it.
You will get less negative comments if you learn the terms we use.
