I have the same problem - same error message. I am running XP Pro. Every time
I search for updates it is offered, but never completes successfully. Also
the "updates ready" icon is displayed in the bar all the time. I emailed MS
support but got no response. Is there a cure and is the uodate neded?

i have no idea what SQL Server is, why I would want it, or how I can get
widows update to stop usucessfully installing it. i get error messages; but I
can't do anything with them. Basically, my computer works fine, so how can I
getthis p[rocess to stop, or if it could do something useful, what would it
do. I simply have a single stand-alone computer networked in a home network,
but am not in any snse a 'server". Anyone, please help. Karl Jackson

What other products do you have installed? Something else might
have installed SQL Server to support its features. Latest example
I can think of is Windows Live Essentials.

In any case, it will be listed somewhere in your Add/Remove Programs
(e.g. if your OS is XP), so remove it there and you will not need to
install any updates for it.

BTW always disclose your OS when you need help
and if you want help it is usually best to start your own thread
with your own details to avoid confusing them with the OP's.

Also a better newsgroup to ask for help about SQL
would be one which specializes in that product.
Normally I would initiate a cross-post to an SQL NG
for a question such as this but because yours is a
post unrelated to the OP's problem I won't.

Good luck

As Robert says, SQL Server Express Edition is often installed by other products,
to provide them with database services. It isn't really a server in the usual
sense of the word.

If you have Windows XP and service pack 3 is installed, the most likely problem
is the one described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=968749

This KB article is talking about manual installs of SQL Server, but the same
issue applies to the express edition service pack install, and the same
workaround works.

Harry.
