MS uninstall info for pilot WGA Notifications updated 6/30, but...

The KB article here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921914

was been updated June 30. This contains revised instructions to
disable or uninstall the "pilot versions" of WGA Notifications
(KB905474). Some, but not all, of the errors discussed earlier
appear to have been corrected.

There remains the issue of which versions are covered by these
instructions. The article still directs you to go into Add/Remove
and confirm the version number of WGA Notifications, which must be
between 527 and 532.

But when I do that, it very clearly says I have version 526. I show
version 530 of the Validation Tool, but that's not the one they
tell you to look at. I guess I could make the assumption that my
version is a pilot version, and the instructions will work, but I
hate to make assumptions about something like that.

I don't know how to get an official answer to this question.

Thanks for the update - I'm pleased they corrected the instruction.

Microsoft fullfillment team members sometimes post in this group,
generally appending [MSFT] to their name, but not often.
Your best bet for an official answer may be to email WU support,
or use the forums set up to sop up feedback about WGA.

If your "WinVN" newsreader is like Outlook Express, clicking
this newslink ought to cough up your post which I reference:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/O1U9Xy8m...TNGP05.phx.gbl

If your "WinVN" newsreader, unlike Outlook Express, does not
implement newslinks, see your earlier post at the bottom of this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...bb5531dc3f4a7b

You say, "Well, you know, that's probably BS too, but..."

A problem with the forums is that you must use Passport to post:
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx

A problem with WU support is that it's a convoluted procedure,
which often enough does not resolve issues. Especially for beta:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/...h=1&gprid=6527

You may just want WGA Notifications uninstalled, rather than getting an
official answer to your question about the procedure provided and the
version number you have, which is less than the lower limit. Obviously,
you could try the procedure to see if the lower limit was a misstatement.

The uninstaller Freudi has made available is for XP, and while it might
work for Vista, experiment would call for a readiness to reinstall Vista.
Am I correct in assuming that you are running Windows Vista?

I'm not interested in signing up for Passport. And I'm
offended that I need to do that to participate in the
forums.

It looks like it takes an act of Congress to do email too.

Yes, uninstallion is what I really want. The problem is
that I may not be able to tell whether it worked properly or
not, and I may not know until later whether that attempt
screwed up something else. That's why I was hoping I could
get an answer from MS before proceeding.

No, I'm running XP, specifically MCE2005. I found a file
named RemoveWGA.exe, but don't recall the name Freudi
associated with it. Can you tell me how I can find the
Freudi file? Do you feel comfortable with the Freudi file?

Thanks for your help.

The uninstaller Ottmar Freudenberger makes available jumps
up a bilingual dos box - English and German, then a dialogue
box notifies you there's one minute to the reboot, after which
another bilingual dos box tells you it succeeded. Download:
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...ninstaller.exe

It's called KB905474-Uninstaller.exe, not RemoveWGA.exe.
If you can read German, I suppose this is documentation:
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/2006/06/07/05-47-32.html
Posting here, Freudi explained that it's a collection of .bat files
that can be inspected by using WinRAR to unpack the exe.
Save it, then run it, and it gets rid of Notifications.

Yes, thanks very much. I even understand most of it. And
thanks very much to Freudi.

In case anyone wants to look, here's where I found the
removewga file:
