MS Update & Install Issues

Last night, as I turned off my laptop, I received msg indicating that Windows
Updates was in progress. I clicked the option to install the updates and
have the laptop shut down automatically after installation is complete.
However, this morning, the laptop was on (frozen) and I had to shut it down
manually (hard shut down - had to hold the on/off button down until it shut
off).

When the laptop booted up, I received an erorr message that the updates
didn't install. I went to the Windows update page to see if there are
outstanding updates afor my computer and the process just runs and runs and
runs. I stopped it manually after about 20 mins without a result and tried
it again three times, after rebooting each time, with the same results.

After four attempts, I gave up. Then I noticed a little yellow shield in my
start up tray with a message that updates were ready for installation. I
clicked to have them installed. Then, I received an error message that said:

Automatic Updates

Updates were unable to be Successfully Installed

The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB928843)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB920813)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2007 (KB890830)
Update for Excel 2003 (KB929058)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB929057)
Security Update for Office XP (KB920816)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB918118)
Update for Office 2003 (KB925251)
Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB929060)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB928090)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB926436)
Security Update for Office XP (KB929063)
Update for Windows XP (KB931836)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB924667)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB929064)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB928255)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB924885)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB927802)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779)

Help! How do I resolve this? Any ideas?

Win XP Pro
Norton Anti-Virus
SpySweeper
Toshiba Sattellite P105-S9722

I'm having the exact same problem, Barbara, though not all the programs you
mention below, just 7 of them related to Office 2003. Anyone know what's
going on?

Very similar things are happening to me too - I also got 'Updates were
unable to be successfully installed'. I went through lots of
troubleshooting material and eventually managed to 'Rename the Edb.log file'
as suggested in MSKB article 822798. I had to turn off automatic Microsoft
and Windows updates to achieve this, the file was otherwise always 'in use'.
It didn't help though, and now Windows Update tells me the updates are loaded
and ready to install, but when I click Install (and subsequently Cancel)
nothing happens - the window just sits there.

I am also using a Toshiba and Norton Anti-Virus. It that just a
coincidence? What about you Joanne?

I've gone through one of the troubleshooting options suggested by Microsoft -
deleting all temporary files, cookies, etc., but that didn't help. They have
13 possible fixes! Some are more advanced that I would want to try on my
own. I have submitted a tech support request to MS, suggesting they look at
this forum for all the update problems going on. I have turned off
Automatic Updates.

I use a Compaq and Norton Internet Security.

Howdy...

I had this same problem the last time around and again this time around.
What seemed to fix it was this KB article...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884298.

Near as I can tell when you run a registry cleaner it deletes certain key(s)
which is described in the above article. The above article also explains
how to recreate the missing registry key(s), which is pretty easy to create.
After recreating the registry key(s) try to reinstall the updates. For me
it they were installed successfully.

Hope this helps...

I was having the same problem of the Microsoft Updates not applying to Office 2003. I have a new Toshiba laptop. The computer came loaded with MS Works and One Note. I removed both of these programs and the updates installed for Office 2003.
