MS Update is broken

My MS update seems to be broken - anyone got any hints?

It used to work, but recently I get the little yellow shield saying it is
downloading updates, but it stays at 0%. I can go to the MS website and
update manually, but the automatic update bit seems to be broken.

I'm not sure if it is relevant but at about the same time, I seem to have
problems with my Sophos anti-virus update - when it says it tries to contact
the sophos server, it says it fails. But I can uninstall Sophos and reinstall
and it brings down the most up to date version, with the same credentials -
but subsequent updates don't work.

I Use XP MCE 2005 (ie XP pro). It is up to date. I use the XP firewall (and
no other) - but the same affect occurs when I switch the firewall off.

Anyone got any ideas?
