I have tried several times to download and install Vista SP1 but it has
failed each time. It appears to download and commence the install but
appears to go 99% then stops. The blue progress bar is full and nothing
further happens even after 2 1/2 hours. There have been no error messages.
The last attempt was made with no programs running and all security software
shut down. Now the download is no longer in the Update list but the History
shows 'Failed'. Any and all help appreciated. TIA LJH

TaurArian: Thank you for your response. I will research the link you
provided. Meanwhile, the following is offered as information regarding my
attempts to download and install Windows Vista SP1:

Another attempt was made after my post. The 'Preparing to Install',
'Downloading', and 'Installing' went rapidly as I assume that most of the
info was already in my computer from prior attempts. Eventually, I got the
encouraging phrase, "The updates were successfully installed". Upon being
directed to restart the computer, the screen said, "Installing Service Pack,
Stage 1 of 3. Do not turn off your computer". Here I do not understand why,
when there had already been a window that said "Installing", was SP1
installing again on restart? Although Stages 1 and 2 seemingly went well,
Stage 3 stopped at 51%. After an hour, no progress. I shut the computer
down and restarted it. Stage 3 install came back up on the screen and
completed the installation. Now the problems began. I was unable to boot my
computer to its normal situation. After several attempts with differing
results, I gave up for the day.

This morning, after a couple of failed attempts, I was finally able to get
to my e-mail, sort of. In finding notification of your response, I clicked
on the link that was supposed to take me to this discussion group. It did not
do so. I got a "Done" but a blank screen. I had to go back and find out how
I got here yesterday.

The only reason I pass on this information is to indicate that installing
Vista SP1 has been frustrating and I am not sure that all my systems are back
to normal. If futher problems present themselves, I plan to either uninstall
SP1 or do a System Restore to get me back to conditions prior to the
installation.

Again, thank you for your response. LJH

Hi there, see if the first link explains why there was a problem with the installation.

The second one shows you a tutorial about System Restore in case you need it and the last
links are where to obtain help from Microsoft.

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts
when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

For those who are unfamiliar with System Restore in Vista - see Using System Restore from
the Vista Windows Recovery Environment

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available at
no charge through 18 Mar-09
