MS/Windows Update problem

I replaced my hardware a couple of months ago, running XP Home +SP2 and
connected via broadband.
I was initially stalled as I needed MS Installer 3.1 but it would not
download, it did eventually.
I'm using Trend PC-cillin and it downloads & installs upgrades ok.

Microsoft Upgrade generates an ever growing list of upgrades to download but
when I click on "Download" the download window opens and the mechanism just
hangs.

I eventually have to close the 'not responding' Task.

Otherwise the machine and internet access seems to work ok. Any ideas please?

Hello Steve, do you see an error code while trying "Updates"?
In your post I read "Upgrade"? "Two different things"
