In MSIE, when I ask for Tools:Windows Update, the page starts to display,
and then MSIE aborts, usually mentioning mshtml and 0xc0000005.

I discovered that if I replaced mshtml.dll (which was 6.0.2900.2802)
with a prior version (6.0.2900.2769), all works fine ... but that's
not a permanent fix because the next "Windows Update" will re-download
an MSIE security fix that includes mshtml ...2802

[Later: And, it looks like that workaround might not be working now.]

MSIE version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Product ID:50293-408-1437634-04168
Update Versions:; SP2; [sic]
(and *WHY* isn't that copyable text?

Platform: Win XP Pro SP2, Intel P<mumble>, 1.5 GB RAM

I checked out http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/5.html,
but the MS links therein didn't seem applicable.

Any suggestions (excluding browser switch appreciated!

thanks!

Stan

That is often a sign of interference from third-party programs.
E.g. something that you have installed was compatible with IE
and now is not.

XPsp2 makes it much easier to selectively test your BHO
with its Manage Add-ons feature (e.g. press Alt-T,A)

The same symptom is often due to malware but in that case
you may not have as much control over it and have to resort
to some of the troubleshooting tools and sites you can see
others refer people to.

Good luck
