MSIEXEC.EXE application error

I have XP PRO SP2. There are 13 critical updates to install. Each one fails
during the installation with the following error message...

msiexec.exe - Application Error
The instruction as "0x00801123" referenced memory at "0x00394458". The
memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on
CANCEL to debug the program.

I have tried to resolve this by...

1. Following the 2 KB artices relating to fixing the Windows Installer.
Basically this entailed deleting the MSI.DLL, MSIEXEC.EXE and MSIHND.DLL and
reinstalling the latest version from here...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9XtzHVMQ%3d%3d

This is version 3.1.4000.2435 - this did not resolve the problem.

2. Next I tried to repair the OS by choosing the repair option from the
original XP installation media. The repair process was successful, and I was
required to download the new installer rom the windows update site but didn't
solve the problem.

3. Then I tired to install SP2 on top. The problem still persists.

So any ideas how to resolve this short of formatting the disk and
reinstalling the OS and all applications from scratch? There is no certainty
that the problem will not re-occur.

PLEASE HELP!!!

1. Did you start with a clean-error-free disk? Chkdsk /f ?
2. Any AV or Firewall apps running?

Hi,

the disk is error free. I am running Symantec Anti Virus but cannot
uninstall it as I get the same error!
