Using v6.1.0202, trying to sign-in, and got a message saying there's a
new version available and I must install it to continue. It won't let
me sign-in if I choose No.

What gives? They forcing us to upgrade now?

Greetings Zaphy,

Yes, the upgrade from previous 6.1 versions to the latest version is required.

Ah only versions of 6.1 have to be upgraded. That's not so bad then!

Interesting... I'm using 6.1.0155 I have never had any connection issues,
although I must admit I haven't tried the voice part. Also, I haven't received
any kind of update notice, not that I would need one.

Is there any documented explanation? From my perspective, I know I'm
already running something that calls itself 6.1. If I get a message
saying "you need to upgrade to the version you've already got", I can
draw only two conclusions...

1 Someone at MS has screwed up and I'd better hold off until
their servers stop broadcasting erroneous notices.

2 Someone at MS needs to do a course in basic arithmetic. Sheesh!
If the upgrade is that major, then why doesn't it even warrant
bumping the minor version number?

I don't like either conclusion much, so I go to the messenger web
site expecting some sort of explanation to make the world seem a
little more plausible. Hmm, nothing.

So I go to this newsgroup to see if I'm the only person in the world
with this problem. Hmm, apparently not.

If Microsoft really want their pronouncements on security to be taken
seriously, they have to stop treating their customers as "unworthy of
even the briefest explanation". This "upgrade" request looks like a
*bug* and anyone who just clicked through and said "yeah, whatever"
really needs to re-think their attitude to internet security.

Yes, I know that, but sub-minor version numbers aren't the usual
way to indicate "oh ****, drop everything and upgrade immediately
or the world will end" major revisions.

My point is that I shouldn't have to dig around newsgroups to find
out such information. If messenger feels unable to function until
it has drunk at the fountain of upgrades, then there should be a
half-decent explanation on the official web-site saying why, and
a version increment that doesn't look like the whole thing is a
server configuration error.

Oh, and the web-site doesn't *give* the FULL version number, so
presumably I have to download and unpack to discover this (or
clock on to this newsgroup and wait for some other victim to
spill the beans, which is what I actually did).
