I assume restarting it from the start menu causes the same thing to happen too? Give that a
try to start.
Also, did you have a previous version of Messenger installed before upgrading to this
version? If so, you might want to consider downgrading at this point.
To do so, uninstall the Windows Live Essentials Suite in Programs and Features/Add or Remove
Programs in the Control Panel, and then install the previous version from here:
