MSN messenger protocol login == network crash???

I've been having an issue with logging in to my MSN messenger account for a
while now. At work it just logs me off of meebo, at home it not only
disconnects my msn as well as any other IM client accounts (I use pidgin for
windows or Miranda IM), but it crashes my router and cable modem. I have to
power cycle my modem and router to get back online at all. Any insight as to
what might be causing this or any ways of fixing said issue?
