Greetings,
Unfortunately this is a problem which has multiple possible solutions as there's lots of
things that can kill the Communications Platform (which is what gets your Messenger contacts
and a few other tasks).
Firstly though, locate the following folder and remove it and all contents:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live
Contacts
Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden
if browsing by default, so to see them simply press the Alt key on the keyboard in any
Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools, then Folder Options, then the
View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'. After click OK, they should appear
with the other folders.
After removing the Windows Live Contacts folder, start up Messenger again and try to log in.
If the problem persists, make sure you aren't using a custom theme (via uxtheme patch) in
Windows or WindowBlinds. You may also want to consider uninstalling any internet security
software, at least temporarily, to see if that addresses the problem as well.
