Jonathan Kay has a detailed article on how to remove the bits for Windows Live
Messenger here:
http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com...DA1!1723.entry
It may help. On the other hand, you will eventually need to update to the latest
version anyway, so it night be easier to bite the bullet and reinstall the
latest version.

What is the exact Error message number displayed?

Check your IE Connection settings - Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN -
uncheck proxy and automatically detect, then click OK and try again.

You may want to pop in at the Windows Live Messenger newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.messenger
Web link:

Jonathan Kay posted a solution here that appears to resolve that error :

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&cr=&sloc=&p=1

I'll paste his answer here. It includes links to 4 files to download and run
that should repair the problem:

"This error indicates a problem with Messenger on your machine, not a problem
with the service.

You may be able to quickly solve the problem by installing the following
components simply by
downloading the MSI files linked following and just running them to install:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3rc/dw20.asp
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3rc/msvcrt.asp
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/red...e/contacts.asp

After these are installed, try Messenger again."
