Hi Everyone:

Is there a compatibility issue or other problem with a Windows 2000 server
system running the latest version of Windows Update and trying to access the
Internet via another server running Microsoft Proxy 2.0?

I've run into a situation here where each server that's upgraded to the
latest version of Windows Update starts reporting 0x80072F78 errors every
time I try to open the Windows Update page. The servers used to update
successfully through the same proxy server prior to updating to the latest
version of Windows Update.

Windows XP clients in the same domain and accessing the Internet through the
same proxy server don't appear to have this issue.

Regards,
Brian

I am having a very similar problem here. Since installing the latest version
of Windows Update on my Windows 2000 Professional workstations, I am no
longer able to update via the Windows Update Page. I receive error
0x80072F78. My workstations are also connecting to the internet via
Microsoft Proxy 2.0. I was wondering - do you use Panda Antivirus? We use
Panda Corporate Antivirus and I was thinking that maybe it was causing the
update problem (although it never occurred before prior to installing the
latest Windows Update Service.

I had a problem downloading and installing updates using the latest update
service on my home system running Windows 2000 Professional - and it was
related to Panda Antivirus Titanium 2005 - a patch was available through
Panda. Thought maybe comparing notes might help both of us resolve this
issue.

Newer Windows Update has problems authenticating through proxys. You should
have stayed with the previous version of WU.

Troubleshooting Windows Update v.5 Authentication Issue
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...ateauthen.mspx

The solution is to allow access to the WU Server "anonymously", however
Proxy2 has no mechanism to do that with only specific Sites as ISA can do.

The other solution is to run a SUS or WSUS Server on the Proxy2 Machine and
designate it as the WU Server for the Clients instead of the MS ones out on
the Internet. The SUS or WSUS Server gets the update from the MS Servers
first (it can since it runs on the proxy box itself), then the Clients get
the updates from it. This is the best way anyhow,...it is centrally managed
and updates are only downloaded once instead of once for every machine on
the LAN.

Thanks for this Phillip:

We do use SUS (and soon WSUS). However, I like to test the updates on one
or two systems before approving them on the SUS server, and currently I do
this by using IE on the selected test system to update the system via the
Windows Update site. Looks like I'll have to review my test procedure
(until we've replaced MSP2.0 with ISA 2004).

Brian

Test the patches by finding them on the SUS folder where they are kept and
install them from there instead of doing it over the Internet. Why download
twice? The files are right there on the SUS box,...use them.

They are in the "SUS\content\cabs" folder
