Been using MS Update for ages perfectly fine. However today it says it wont
run -

"The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:"

Its the usual ones - Auto updates/BITS and Event Log. However, they are all
active and running, just as they were a few days ago when I last checked.

Most bizarre!!!

Any suggestion?

You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled and running:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left; and status "Running" on the far right.

If still failing, attach an extract from windowsupdate.log file (only the entries for the last session (date) at W U ).

Nope, it didnt need all those services running (especially system restore
which I always disable). All I needed to do is switch Auto Updates to Auto
from Manual. Strange that up till now manual has been fine.

Thanks for the reply though, appreciate it.

What will you do if someday a restore from System Restore is called for? or may be useful for recovery purposes?

Easy...do a re-install. System restore is for folks who dont mind their hard
drives being taken up with several Gb of mostly useless backups.

Would rather spend the time doing a nice cut-down fresh nLite install than
rely on system restore. Just works better for me.
