mswsock.dll problems after Windows Update

Avec updating about 40 problems with Windows Update,my computer refuses to
connect to Internet and shows an error message concerning mswsock.dll

When I use Windows restore to go back to before the update, everything is
fine again I therefore conclude that my problem comes from one of the
updates. The problem is : which one?!!

Is there anyway of finding out without having to install the 40 updates one
by one?

Thanks in advance

Steve

I add that this is a clean installation from zero

I would guess that if you have one which changed iexplore.exe
you could try avoiding it. However, the cause of the symptom
would not necessarily be the update but the fact that iexplore.exe
had changed. E.g. some third-party security packages need to be
reconfigured either by the user or by their providers support to *allow*
the changed iexplore.exe and not regard it as a possible Trojan
that needs to be blocked from connecting to the Internet.
Why they have to do this "silently" mystifies me.

Ok thanks for the answer, I think you're probably right, because IE8 was one
of the updates.
I'll give it a try and keep you informed

Nope! Internet Explorer isn't the problem sniff sniff

It's a real pain, cos Windows Update installs 93 updates and I haven't the
faintest idea which of these causes the problem.

Help!!!

Sure it isn't, but the "Security Software" you've running in the background
"may" be causing this, especially if you're running the snake oil "ZoneAlarm".

In case you're running Windows XP, you may fall into an interference with
the important(!) security update KB951748 (MS08-037) and your "Security
Software" especially ZoneAlarm in non-updated versions. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951748 and the "Known issue" section there.

Zone Alarm is not installed

I get the problem even before I install security software

Fine.

> I get the problem even before I install security software

You've read what I've written above? Try to exclude KB951748 (MS08-037)
*temporary* from the list of updates your systems (whichever Windows
version you're using) needs to install. In case not installing KB951748
"resolves" the problem you're running into, please specify exactly

#1 which Windows version you're running
#2 which Service Pack is installed on that system
#3 which applications are loaded during Windows start
(Start -> Run -> msconfig [Enter/OK] -> System Start)

Just to be clear and to prevent missunderstandings: Your system *needs*
to install KB951748 (MS08-037) to be more secure!

Bye,
Freudi
