Several of you have encountered the problem with the MSXML 4.0 Security
Update being reoffered again and again. At Microsoft we have been work at
trying to find the best and least impactful way of addressing this fix. We
are in the final stretch of releasing an update through Windows Update. An
update should be available very soon.

In the meantime, you can work around this issue by repair the current MSXML
4 installation by following these steps below:

1. Download the latest MSXML 4 SP2 update from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
2. Run the following package (msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe) with the following
command-line:

/q REBOOT=ReallySuppress REINSTALLMODE=amus
REINSTALL=MSXML,MSXMLSXS,MSXMLSYS,MSXMLSUPP,MSXMLS UPP2

This command-line will force the installer to run in repair mode, which will
fix the version of MSXML4.dll installed in the %windir%\system32 folder.
After running this command, the version of MSXML4.dll should be 4.20.9841.0.
Once the version of MSXML4.dll is at 4.20.9841.0, the update on Windows
Update should no longer offer.

If you try the above work around and it does address the reoffering problem,
please let me know.

Thanks you and sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you,
Peter Saddow - Microsoft

my computer did not recognize the command line. Then the computer said I
didn't have access or the key to install this. I don't understand this.. I
am the admistrator on my computer.. but it says I don't have access.

Which OS are you running on? Are you trying to run the command-line at a
command-prompt? Are you running the the package as follows:

msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe /q REBOOT=ReallySuppress REINSTALLMODE=amus
REINSTALL=MSXML,MSXMLSXS,MSXMLSYS,MSXMLSUPP,MSXMLS UPP2

Thanks,

Judy,

Most likely there's a registry subkey that's blocking the installation
of the update. Do you see the randomly named folders being created every
time you attempt to install KB927978 ? Usually, they're on root drive,
C:\. If the HardDrive has more than one partition or there is more than
one HardDrive, they will be on the partition/HD with the most free space.
Open the last randomly named folder created and then open the log file
contianed therein. Please post the log file into your reply.

Yes. My hard drive is partitioned.

I tryed to attach the log but they said it was too long. The limit is 30000
but the file had 124487. If you need me to e-mail to to somewhere.. I can do
that.. but I can't post it here.

Dear Peter,

Do you mean that microsoft will release an update to solve this problem for
us very soon so that we can leave the MSXML 4.0 Security Update Reoffering
problem at this moment?

The file should be called what I mentioned. Click on the link and choose to
down the package and SAVE to your C:\ drive. Next at a command prompt or
click on Start and then RUN. Run the following following command:

c:\msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe /q REBOOT=ReallySuppress REINSTALLMODE=amus
REINSTALL=MSXML,MSXMLSXS,MSXMLSYS,MSXMLSUPP,MSXMLS UPP2

This command will repair the existing MSXML installation. If this does not
work, you may want to wait until Microsoft (my team) releases the fix
through Windows Update.
