I went to use my computer today and the screen was completely different. I
restarted my computer and revceived an error message stating my user profile
was corrupted and it was creating a temporary profile.

I looked at the event viewer log file. After the above named application
was installed, the following error appeared:
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by
insufficient memory or insufficient security rights. DETAIL - Error
performing inpage operation. for C:\Documents and Settings\KJ\ntuser.dat

Subsequent error messages appeared:
Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try
to use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.

Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary
profile. Change you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

Can I back out of this update? If so, how? Will this restore my user
profile?

Running XP Professional SP2.

One assumes you're referring to Security Update for Microsoft XML Core
Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181); AKA MS08-069.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB936181).

All users:

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.
