Stuart,

Open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Under Windows XP - Software Updates, is KB925672 listed ? (The Show
updates box at the top must be checked to view the installed updates)

If it is, then uninstall it and restart the system afterwards.
If it is not, then download msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-6F18FE6921D4

Save it, do NOT run it.
Close the browser and any other open program.

There are numerous randomly named folders on either the C:\ drive or the
drive with the most free space. They were created for EACH installation
attempt of KB927978 and contain a log. Please delete them ALL. now.

Double click msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe and choose REMOVE
When the process is done, reboot the system if prompted to.
If not, double click msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe and choose INSTALL
Reboot if prompted to

KB927978 supercedes KB925672, so there's no need to install KB925672.

Did that get it installed ? If not, open the randomly named folder
created by this last installation attempt, open the log file, and post
back the ERROR message contained in the log.
Start at the bottom of the log and work your way back up toward the top,
Stuart.

I am having a similer problem, but when i tried to follow your stepps, i get
something else.

When i install this file i get:

Could not access:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID

and says to check permissions, however, I changed the permissions of that
key to allow everyone full controll and it still didnt work.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi -

I tried to follow the instructions below but still receive an error stating
it cannot be installed and I still receive the message I have updates.

I have also tried to turn off the automatic updates, reboot, reinstall and
turn updates back on. This seems to resolve the error message I was getting
(svchost.exe Application error 0x745f2780). However, I still cannot install
the security update.

It is listed under Add/Remove Programs, but if I try to remove it I receive
the following error:

The path 'c:\b4f602886d78425a559083db5c\msxml.msi' cannot be found. Verify
that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the
installation package 'msxml.msi' in a folder from which you can install the
product MSXML.4.0 SP2 (KB 927978).

The last log file I received when trying to install the security update is:
