I think this is what is happening:
Some updates supersede older updates: e.g. update B supersedes older update
A.
If you "hide" update B, then update A will be offered, and so on.
If you reinstall/repair Win XP, then the first thing to do is install XP
Service Pack 2 - don't bother with any other update offered at first. Once
you have installed Service Pack 2, then run Windows Update or Microsoft
Update and install every Crtiical Update offered.
