Multiple 'Automatic Updates' icons filling the screen on PC boot (Windows 2000)

The operating system is Windows 2000 with SP4. It was working fine
until about a week ago, and there have been no new installs during this
time. Every morning, he has loads (probably hundreds) of the 'automatic
updates' icon filling his screen (the MS flag / Globe) picture that
usually sits in the task bar. After that, he can work normally but
periodically four of these icons appear in their usual place in the
task bar, but as soon as he moves the mouse over them they disappear.
Has anyone seen this weird problem, and does anyone have any
suggestions on how to resolve it? Thanks.

Except for the specific icon involved I would say this question
is more related to your OS than WU; so you would proably get
a more knowledgeable answer in a newsgroup which specializes
in your OS.

FWIW my guess would be that your icon cache is corrupt and needs
to be rebuilt.

(MSN search for
"icon cache" site:support.microsoft.com
)

Dave Patrick [MVP] has an interesting alternative technique
using Display Properties and icon size:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...8?dmode=source

(Google Groups search for
shelliconcache (MSFT OR MVP) group:microsoft.*
- sorted by date to try to capture current thinking
- latest hit in a win2000 newsgroup
)

Thanks buddy. I upgraded the computer to XP and that sorted it, so your
suggestion might well have been correct.

Well ... that's certainly a wise move. No need to deal with the icon
cache when one can just upgrade to a more current OS.
If a similar issue strikes again early next year, will you upgrade the
system to Vista ?
