multiple "Desktop" files

On my desktop is an icon with my user name.
If I double click it, a folder opens containing other folders named
"Downloads" and "Pictures" etc. Two of those folders are named "Desktop."
(Call them "D1" and "D2.")

One ("D2") contains a folder named "Desktop." That folder contains another
folder called "Desktop" which happens to be the same folder as "D1"

I don't know how this happened, but when it happened, it deleted some stuff
from my desktop that I've had to remember/recover.

I can not get back to having one "Desktop" file. I cannot rename any of
them, I cannot move the contents around and then delete empty folders.

Is there a solution or should I just hold my nose and ignore it?

There are no shortcuts involved. The problem has not gone away so I guess
Windows just doesn't get it.
The last thing I did (that seems relevant) before this problem arose was to
run the Vista disk check (looks like CHKDSK) with the option to scan for and
attempt recovery of bad sectors--I had never done that before.

Thanx for asking.
