Since it was issued, my computer has downloaded the Security Update for
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) twenty-three times.
It shows that it was successfully installed each time. So why am I
continually being prompted to install it?

Got similar problem with Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK for Windows
XP (KB929399). Downloaded and installed this three times, apparently
successfully but every time I go to Windows/Microsodt Update I am told to
download and install this update. Lets hope someone will solve our problems.

Yes, but no joy, I'm afraid. The install log shows a lot of "fails", see

Sorry - I cannot tell - but the last time I had a repeated request, I had to
go through that link I gave to you, three times before it installed.
And I did the install disconnected from the net and with ALL security
software off/disabled, via download to disc.

If your WMP 11 is working OK, then hide the download in the Hidden Folder in
WU Home, until a solution is found - that way you will not keep getting the
offer.

I know you are using that hideous web interface, but sometimes posts in
another's thread will be ignored when they appear in newsgroups, where I am
reading this.

The OP was re KB936181 - your post is re KB929399.
It makes the following and reading of a thread quite difficult as time
passes.
Hope you don't mind the mention.

I would recommend newsgroups as opposed to that clunky, slow and archaic
form of communication. Newsgroups are just as simple as sending an email -
no registration etc.

Rgds
