Hi, I have had multiple failures to install this following update:

Update for Windows Vista (KB938371)

Installation date: ‎2/‎15/‎2008 6:42 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 800705B4

Update type: Important

Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all
editions of Windows Vista. This update may be required before selected future
updates can be installed. After you install this item, you may have to
restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be
removed.

More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938371

Help and Support:

-----

I am running on Vista Business 32 Bit. I have AVG. I have tried automatic
updates a few times but it just keeps having "Configuring Updates" for approx
30 min when I start up and the update has not been installed after. I have
tried downloading the standalone updates for this KB938371 as well as another
patch suggested to enable its installation but I only got "data not valid"
when I tried to install the standalone update.

Any advice please? This is really frustrating.

"data not valid" - it appears just by reading that there might be some kind of corruption
of the download.
Perhaps clear out all temporary internet files, do a little hard disk maintaince like
chkdsk, defrag etc and then re-download and try the update.

You may also want to clear the temporary updates folder in case of corruption there -

How to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in Vista -
1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator)

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop.

2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

3. Start the Windows Update service

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update Site. Not important.

You can check which updates are installed on your computer by -
Start button || Control Panel || Programs
Under Programs and Features - click View installed updates.

This is only suggestions as at the moment there doesn't appear to be any firm solutions
being offered.

I too am suffering with the exact same problem. I am using Vista home premium
32bit. Perhaps this is a widespread problem? I recently downloaded 'Live
Messenger' - have you downloaded anything that may for some reason be
incompatible with the windows update?

Perhaps you just need to wait until the rush is over? <eg>

Details? E.g. post a relevant excerpt from the install log which shows
the context of that last symptom. One possible explanation for a related
symptom would be that you downloaded the wrong version (e.g. 64-bit
version instead of 32-bit version) and tried to execute it. Etc.

Try the following which worked for me (thanks Tunkytoy). In the 'search for'
box type in your error code ie 800705b4. See the thread started by TimothyG
'updates 4 windows vista' and follow the advice of Tunkytoy. Good luck.

Hi thank you for the clear guide...I followed it and got it solved...A note
to those who want to try this:

I couldn't find SoftwareDistribution under the search for some reason. If
you can't find it, look into Windows folder and you will find it.

After renaming, I turned on Windows Update again and there was another error
code. In case you get it, you may have to clear the files within the
Datastore under SoftwareDistribution. I got this solution using Windows Help.
After that i could run the install successfully.

Thanks again!
