hello all,

ive been using vista x64 for a few weeks now and i love it. installed
with new 160gb hd that was part of my build, then added old ide drive,
which is also 160gb. it recently filled up, so i purchased a 750gb hd.
just got it installed, went my computer > manage > disk management and
formatted. runs fine. only problem is, when my computer turns on, the
bios doesnt remember which drive is the boot drive, i have to manually
hit f12, and select the drive. what am i missing here? there are no
jumper pins on any the back of any of the drives, including my dvd
drive, which by the way is also ide. is this what the problem is? i need
to find one of those damn tiny things and put it on my master boot
drive?

thanks in advance....

been lurking for a while... just the forum i was looking for

I assume that you have 2 SATA drives and 1 IDE. The SATA drives do no
use jumpers, just plug them in. I set my IDE drives to Cable Select.
have a similar system and the boot priority, or which hard drive is th
first to boot, is set in the motherboard BIOS. Check the motherboar
documentation if you have any problem figuring out the BIOS setting
sometimes it is not too clear when you first try it

Interestingly enough, it seems that some do, although not to select it's
device ID.

I just installed a 250G Seagate 3G/sec SATA-II drive and it did have a
jumper on it, but this jumper is used to limit it to the slower SATA-I
speed.

And of course, it comes defaulted to use the slower speed.

Yep, Vista on some systems still has issues with SATA-II drives. I
have several and like you said some come with a tiny jumper to switch
between the 1.5 and 3 GB a second rated transfer speeds. Not real
world speed, but rated that.

I move large files between various hard drives all day long. It makes
no sense how Vista performs. Sometimes Vista will drag along and get
if I'm lucky 20-26 MB a second, sometimes only 15 MB or even less.

Other times it will get a good 40-50, every 60 MB a second. Once in a
rare while it gets over 100 MB a second. The size of the file doesn't
matter nor does the file type. MPEG, AVI, RM, WMV, you name it, no
rhyme or reason how fast or slow the files might copy/move between the
various drives. Just playing around moving them back and fourth I've
seen totally weird results. I can move the same file 10 times and how
fast Vista does it varies from 20-30 MB a second up to 60 MB or more.

The odd thing is both drives are identical, both being 500 GB each,
both are on the same SATA-II controller, both have the jumpers set the
same. Makes no sense why Vista is this random in how long it takes to
copy/move the SAME file back and forth.

Another weird thing Vista sees phantom drives every so often. I have
many externals which I turn on and off as needed. When I turn them off
using the safely remove option, Vista being the brain dead pile of
crap it is sometimes sees a "I" drive in additional to the "H" drive
I'm actually attempting to shut down. I have drive letters C, E, F, G,
H, X and Z. No I, never had any "I" drive set up, yet Vista sometimes
sees one with that drive letter.

Naturally the usual suspects will try to say my system isn't
"configured" correctly or some other bullshit. You expect such
comments form the idiots that hang out here that don't know any
better.

Since I do video editing extensively I work with large files
constantly. Since installing Vista I estimate I've moved far in excess
of thousands of TB worth of files. Why Vista is so unpredictable in
how it does this simply task makes no sense. Moving the same files
outside of using Vista's shell it is ALWAYS fast so nothing configured
incorrectly hardware wise, or it would act up then too. I suspect the
slowness comes from Vista piping files through it's moronic "security"
routines to check permissions and maybe Digital Rights Management
crap.

Then use linux you twit...and shut the frig up.
How stupid are you to keep using the same tool and bitching about it.

I now know for a fact that you are a whiny little girl.

No man acts like you.

ill have to do that. and also i need to put a jumper on the ide drive,
even though it isnt my boot drive.. correct?

All you clueless MS fanboys act like immature little girlie-men.
Hobbes, I bet you have limp wrists, talk with a lisp, your favorite
color is pink and your carry a man-purse instead of a wallet and you
sometimes squat when you take a ****.

I imagine you look something like this:

Depends on what type and how the drives are configured.

The older master/slave relationship for IDE drives has long been
replaced by Cable Select. If your drives and BIOS support that, then
that's what I would use. If you have older drives or prefer using
Master/Slave and you're using some IDE cable to connect them every
pair needs a master, slave combination. You can't have two masters or
two slaves on the same channel. You change the relationship by
adding/moving a little jumper. Be careful doing so they can be very
fragile and can break easily. Best to use a toothpick or a very small
screwdriver blade to gently push them up. How to change from master to
slave or cable select varies depending on model and manufacturer.
There should be a diagram on the drive itself.

Better stop posting pics of your "life partner" or whatever you call him.
Some NG stud might steal him from you.
