Multiple installations of the same update

There are presently three copies of Security Update for Microsoft XML Core
Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) installed on my computer, all of which
have been downloaded & installed by automatic update. The version number
(KB936181) i s exactly the same for all. Can you tell me why this keeps
happening? When I did a check this morning for updates, it appeared again
and downloaded yet again. As a result I have cancelled automatic updates for
the time being as I don't think that I need three copies of the same program
on my PC.

I am running Microsoft Windows XP Pro Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp.080413-211:Service Pack 3) & using Internet Explorer Version:
7.0.5730.11IS

Plesae help me if you can.

(KB936181) may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update
or on Windows Update

Do Step 4 first and *save* the update.
Next, boot to Safe Mode and rename msxml4.dll from a Command Prompt, as
shown in the KB article.
Reboot to normal Windows mode and then install msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe
with *all* programs and browsers closed.
