Multiple monitors on RV380 after downloading updates

I have a Radeon X600 Pro PCIexpress graphics card. After stupidly
downloading driver updates from Microsoft my computer now shows multiple
monitors on RV380 with my Radeon X600 relegated to secondary card. Every
time I boot up the computer finds new hardware which of course isnt there.
On rebooting the computer works ok but I would like to get back to the
original position before I downloaded the drivers. System restore doesnt
work and anyway it doesnt go back into 2007 - is that normal? Thanks for any
help.

Hi there,

It sounds like a driver update has occured which messed up the
graphicssettings.

Hopefully you did not take any non MS driver(s) from windows update?

Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for
Microsoft hardware.

If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go
to the manufacturers website to look for an updated driver.

If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it.

If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last
known good configuration ( f8 during boot), rolling back on the driver or
use system restore in safe mode prior to a date of the problem or restore
from the full system backup you hopefully made.

Assuming you are using Windows XP: here you can see how to roll back on a
device driver:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...rrollback.mspx

You can disable the update in question appearing when automatic updates is
set by going to the windows update website and unmark (hide) driver in
question.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Hi Michel

I took your advice and restarted the computer in Safe mode and did a System
Restore to an earlier point and it worked. The Phantom RV380 graphics
adapter had been replaced by my Radeon one and the computer boots up without
thinking it has found new hardware.

I still dont know why carrying out a system restore when the computer is
running normally results in a message saying that it could not be restored to
an earlier point without giving any explanation. System restore only works
in safe mode. Do you have any idea why that should be and how I could cure
it?

Or why restore dates are only available for 2008? Is that normal or could
it be that because the computer is 4 years old and although the system
restore setting is set to maximum, maybe it has become full and old restore
points have been deleted?

Many thanks for your help
Frances

Hello Frances,

Good to hear that your problem is solved

System restore works best in safe mode , because in normal mode a lot of
files are in use and cannot be replaced while they are in use so in this way
system retore "fails".

This behaviour is normal so no need to "cure" anything.

If system restore has been disabled before, for instance when scanning for
virusses in safe mode, the old restore points are lost.

It is always best to make a manual restore point before making major changes
to the system as for instance a driver upgrade.

Best regards,
Michel Denie
