Multiple updates not installing

I am running Windows Vista (came installed on my laptop). I never had a
problem running updates until March. The last successful install was 3/6/08.
Since that time the system has downloaded 22 updates but won't install any
of them. When I go through the error code it gives me, the fix won't happen.
It tells me to Start the BITS, and the BITS won't start. It begins and then
I get an error stating "BITS service on local computer started and then
stopped. Some servises stop automatically if not in use by other services or
programs."

What error is it giving you?

You might want to try my tool:
www.codeplex.com/aureset

Let me know if that helps or not.

Excellent tool. Used it on 2 of my clients systems that had numerous issues with WU and it fixed the issues. Only thing that I was surprised at is that the code run a bit long. But it worked. Great job

[In a new thread, OP states that the aureset tool did not resolve the
problem.]

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

At a command prompt run the following:

REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL
REGSVR32 QMRPRXY.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Then see if you can start the service.
If not, try rinstalling BITS from:

You are all waaaaay toooo smart for me. Half the things you are saying for
me to do lose me before I get through the first suggestion. Is there a way
to "dumb it down" for us non computer guru types. I would love to try just
about everything before I unload a lot of cash on what would have been a
simple fix.

sorry about starting a new "thread" as I said above, I'm not the computer
genius.

Sorry about that. All you need to do is go to the start menu and choose run.
type cmd.exe (hit enter)
When the command promt comes up, you can then type all of the commands I
listed one at a time (you should get a pop-up after each confirming that it
did something.

I do have a tool that automates this stuff, but there is somr red tape on
my end right now that prevents it from being available at the moment.

Here's what happened...only one of them succeeded. The rest gave me error
messages as follows...

>
> REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL

The module "QMGR.DLL" was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was
not found. Make sure the "QMGR.DLL" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try
again.

> REGSVR32 QMRPRXY.DLL

The module "QMRPRXY.DLL" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored
at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or
dependent .DLL files. The specified module cold not be found.

> REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

The module WUAUENG.DLL was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed
with the error code 0x80070005. For more information about this problem,
search online using the error code as a search term.

> REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

The module "WUAUENG1.DLL" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored
at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or
dependent .DLL files. The specified module cold not be found.

> REGSVR32 ATL.DLL

The module ATL.DLL was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with
the error code 0x8002801c. For more information about this problem, search
online using the error code as a search term.

> REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

The module "WUCLTUI.DLL" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored
at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or
dependent .DLL files. The specified module cold not be found.

> REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

the error code 0x80070005. For more information about this problem, search
online using the error code as a search term.

> REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

DllRegisterServer in WUPS2.DLL succeeded

> REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

The module "WUWEB.DLL" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at
the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or
dependent .DLL files. The specified module cold not be found.
