MUST NOW TURN OFF COMPUTER TO LOAD UPDATES!!

Just this past week, I have noticed that after updates are downloaded onto my
computer using Windows XP with SP2, I now have to turn off my computer in
order for the updates to be loaded. In the past, I could just click on the
tray icon and I would be given the option of doing an Express Install or a
Custom Install. As it is now, once the updates are downloaded, the icon
disappears and you don't even know that there are updates to be installed
until you get ready to restart the computer. At that time you are told that
there are updates to be loaded, and that you must turn off your computer in
order for them to be installed. You are not given the option of reviewing
the updates. Is this something new regarding updates? I don't want to be
forced to turn off my computer to load updates. I never turn off my computer
and would hate to have to start doing so now just to load updates. I have
recently made (2) changes. I had deleted the files that were in the
"Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder trying to correct an error
that I was receiving when I was using the WU web site. Could this have
caused an issue. I also upgraded my McAfee Security Software to the latest
version. Could this be an issue? Can I do anything to change the update
feature back to the way that it was. I have always had my computer security
center set up for Automatic Updates. I just can't understand why I now have
this issue. PLEASE RESPOND WITH ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS. THANK YOU VERY
MUCH!!

The updates are installed before your turn off your 'puter. They take
effect after you restart it and not all updates require restarting.

I'd suspect that McAfee is the most likely culprit. Is this version of
McAfee given to you by your Internet Provider and downloaded/installed
while online ?

When you deleted the files in the Download folder was it because they
were being corrupted and would not install ?

Thanks for your quick reply. To answer your question, all of my updates
come through okay. I only deleted the contents of my
Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder because I was receiving an error
code when using the WU web site. Some articles pointed out that the contents
of the above folder might need to be deleted to eliminate this error code.
As stated, I receive all updates just fine and they install perfectly. It is
just that I now must turn off my computer in order to install them. Why
would this be? In regards to McAfee, I have a subscription directly with
them. They have just came out with a complete new software package, which I
installed on Monday, 03/12/07. I have noticed my update issue since then,
however, McAfee doesn't think that this is their issue.

I don't want to dispute you, but my updates won't install before I turn off
my computer. I get a dialog below my "turn off computer" options stating
that I have updates that need to be installed, and that I must turn off the
computer in order to install them. Once I click on the "Turn Off" option,
the updates are then installed, and the computer then turns off. I don't
want to have to turn off my computer to install updates. ANY MORE
SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHY THIS WOULD BE THE CASE?

Naturally. It seems that McAfee and Symantec think that their products
never have issues <w>
The only time I've seen this issue is when I beta tested an update site,
eg. the updates would only install on shutdown.
Since this issue just popped up recently, one way to determine if the
issue stems from McAfee, or not, is to uninstall the AV, then use System
Restore to roll the system back to just before the 'upgraded' AV was
installed. That would be dependent upon you having the software on hand.

If that's not possible, we could stop the AU service, delete the
contents of the Download and EventCache folder, and then restart the
system. Actually, you may not even need to stop the AU service. Let me
check ... nope, one needs to stop AU to clear the EventCache folder.
So, either stop AU from the Services console - Start > Run > type in

services.msc
Click OK
Click on the Automatic Updates service to highlight it and then click
the Stop button

Delete the contents in SoftwareDistribution\Download and EventCache
Close the window
Restart the AU service

Click Start, Turn Off Computer. Does 'Turn Off' still show updates to
install ? If yes, then choose Restart.

When the system is back up, check once more to see if 'Turn Off' shows
updates to install.

Hey, thanks again for your follow-up regarding my issue. I agree that iT
seems odd that my issue developed after my McAfee upgrade. In regards to
your instructions, I can follow them very closely. I have even read that iF
the updates get messed up too bad, you can completely remove the
SoftwareDistribution folder completely. Does this sound correct? Would this
folder and all of the sub-folders be recreated during the next update.

In regards to making the changes at this time that you had suggested, I
don't have any outstanding updates to install. All of my updates are
currently installed.

Please let me know if you think the SoftwareDistribution folder can be
deleted. I have read that all of the past history would be lost, but that
this really isn't an issue.

PLEASE RESPOND JUST ONE MORE TIME REGARDING THE ABOVE. THANKS FOR YOUR
GREAT GREAT HELP!!

Norb,

I'm responding, take it easy yer breaking my eardrums with the CAPS
on <w>

Yes, when you blow away the SoftwareDistribution folder it will be
recreated when the system accesses WU or MU
There should be no reason to, though. I've *never* had to resort to
that, but then again, neither Norton nor McAfee are allowed near this
system. <eg>

How about trying the steps I suggested for now ? Also, if the system is
regularly scanned for malware by McAfee, how about setting it to *NOT*
scan the SoftwareDistribution folder for now ?
You may be helping to identify just what the heck it is that messes up
[corrupts/damages] the contents of SD.

I shouldn't think your problem is anything to do with Norton or McAfee: I've
got the same problem (see my unanswered post on 16/3/07), and I don't run
either program.

There have always been some updates which require the computer to be shut
down to finish installing - I've had one every couple of weeks on average.
What's new is that we've lost the option to review the updates before they
are installed.

It looks as though AU is ignoring the instruction to "Download updates for
me but let me choose when to install them" and just going ahead regardless -
but I'm b******d if I know why. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I found a suggestion here

maybe worth a try?
