I like Vista!

After reading about the horrors of Vista for over a year I decided to take
the plunge anyway and upgrade. I have a stock Dell Inspiron 640m laptop with
1.6GHz Dual Core Processor and 1G of memory that is labeled "Designed for
Windows XP. Windows Vista Capable."

I did a lot of research on drivers and downloaded a couple that needed to be
updated. I also backed up all my data and did a clean install on a freshly
formated hard drive. The install went smooth.

I upgraded to Vista Ultimate and I like it! It runs smooth, the graphics are
awesome, and the sidebar has some useful tools. I also migrated to a dock
program called RocketDock which makes my desktop very clean looking. The only
thing I do not like is the UAC but I downloaded TweakUAC and life is good.

I have not had one single issue, crash, or conflict. I was worried about MS
Office 2003 but that runs flawlessly as well.

Why do people have so many issues? Is it improper install? I do not
understand!

Mostly the same problem people have setting the VCR.
They do stuff, like install BS, then think it is the OS giving them grief.

Some of the issues here aren't even real.

A lot of "trolls" make stuff up, and post as a real user.
Some of them are Linux propagandist.

You did two things right that I did not. The first was a clean install to a
reformatted hard drive. I had an upgrade disk for my VAIO that kept all my
programs, etc. but also some really bad stuff like ZCfgSvc.exe that ate up
100% of the processor until I finally figured out the problem after many
frustrating hours. The second was your driver research. I ended up with
some conflicts. Even with added memory (I'm up to 1.5 gb with a 1 gb chip
replacing a 512 -- note: generic memory cost approximately 10% of what Sony
wants for the same chip) Vista does not run smoothly on my VAIO. Many
events viewer errors on startup. Some strange video graphic responses.
VAIO support (extended warranty - I'm past my basic 1 year) will not provide
software assistance, only hardware. There is no Sony on site documentation
or discussion of the upgrade process.

So I bought a set of restore disks from Sony - fortunately they had them (my
third error was not making a set before attempting the upgrade). I'm in the
process of restoring XP as I type this.

No criticism of Vista -- I like it on my desktop. Just the VAIO upgrade
process that really didn't work for me.

i'm in the same boat. i'm a long time fan of xp pro for gaming, and
using linux/bsd/solaris since 1997 for actual work. my workstation was a
dual boot setup with ubuntu and xp pro for gaming, learning, coding,
graphics, video, etc. i was in the camp that has been bashing vista
(without merit) since its inception.

however, i decided last week to build me a new workstation/gaming
machine. i also decided i'd give vista ultimate 64-bit a try for kicks,
and if i didnt like it then i'd figure at worst i could play with it
under vmware as a toy.

i built the box with a core2 duo e8500, 4gb pc-1066, radeon 4850, 2x
250gb sata 3gb, asus p5q se mb, and sb audigy2 zs sound.

i must say this is the most dramatic upgrade i've done in a very long
time, and im coming from an amd x2 5200 as well.

as far as vista goes, i've been VERY impressed by it and i can hardly
believe i feel as good about it as i do. it feels wrong, but eh...what
can you do? lol

gaming on this machine is outstanding. unfortunately i still cannot use
windows outside of photoshop/video editing for productivity mainly
because its still lacking virtual desktops and terminal windows which i
need when i code, but overall its a very solid operating system.

for a unix geek who uses windows to play, vista got my two thumbs up
this go around.

You're not the only one. I just upgraded from XP and I'm happy with it.
I like the better security as well as some of my programs actually
perform better. (I didn't expect that from Flight Simulator X.)

I'd be willing to bet 90% of anti-Vista nonsense is from people who have
never used it.

I'll bet 90% of Vista supports only play with their computers and are
simply too stupid to know how to use a PC for serious work and
therefore never see how screwed up Vista actually is.

I'll bet 90% of anti-vista nonsense from people who have used vista and got
fed up with it's performance.

Another non-Vista user proves the point.
