I have Windows Vista Ultimate Edition in Spanish installed on my PC
(genuine), and I’ve downloaded via Windows Update the English
Language Pack that appeared with many other languages the first time I
updated Vista (250 MB approximately). The problem is that when the
downloading process finishes and the installation begins all I get it´s an
error that says “Errors Founds: Code 1” (In Spanish “Errores Encontrados:
Codigo 1”.
I looked at Event Viewer and the error that shows at the failed Language
Pack installation is 0x80070032. Any ideas why this language pack isn´t
installing or how do I fix it?

PS: Rebooting the systems doesn´t seems to work.
Thanks for your help

<cmd_output>

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
</cmd_output>

Look in the log to figure out which process is blocking the update?
Typically there will not be enough information in there to determine that.
And typically not even the /verbose log will be useful (but you might be lucky.)
So what I do is use ProcMon to supplement the logs.
Another approach would be to run the update with minimal other processes
active, e.g. perhaps try it under a safe boot, just guessing that whatever the
processes are which are preventing this one would then not be running. Etc.

Ok. The process which was doing the blocking might always be running.
That's why rebooting in safe mode might work but a regular boot might not.

Good luck

Rodrigo,

All I could locate on this error is this Error String -

> ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED

Not sure if it's a sign of file corruption due to security software or
that the Language pack is not supported.
To eliminate file corruption, suggest you manually download the Language
Pack again with the installed Antivirus program temporarily disabled.
Use Internet Explorer to access Windows Update, close it and any other
open programs, and then attempt to install it.
After the attempted installation remember to reenable the Antivirus
program, please.

Convert to decimal first!

The request is not supported.

So the hypothesis would probably change.
E.g. there would be less reason to suspect a process to be blocking
the update. But you would still want to look in the logs to see what the context
of the error was and very likely still require supplemental diagnostics.

Ok guys, I´ve followed the advices and:

1. I don´t use an Antivirus software. I´ve never had a virus or spyware
ever. (I do use Windows Defender in Vista)
2. I´ve tried closing all programs and nothing seems to work, I´ve killed
all possible process so no background application would interfere, but still
no luck.
3. I´ve copied the “LP-en-us.exe” file stored in the SoftwareDistribution
folder and run it separately and no luck. I´ve done the same in “Safe Mode”
and no luck.
4. Event viewer still shows the same error.

I´m starting to ask myself a few questions. My new PC came with Windows
Vista Ultimate Edition pre-installed. I´ve been reading about Vista for some
time now and something that calls to my attention is that the system came
already installed in Spanish language. And the first time I updated Windows
all the language packs become available for download. I had this same problem
even when the system was brand new without any application installed.

Soo… It´s my Windows copy genuine? It´s really the final product version or
some crappy pre-RTM Build? I´ve typed “winver” in the Run command and I´ve
got (in Spanish):

Microsoft Windows
Version 6.0 (compilación 6000)
Copyright 2006 Microsoft Corporation. Reservados todos los derechos

Ok, so I guess I´ll keep trying. Thanks to all of you for the help.

Ok. If you have a non-English version of Windows Vista and you get the “Code
1” or “Code 2” error when trying to install a language pack via Windows
Update, fallow my advice. Many people solved the problem just restarting the
OS or doing the language pack installation in safe mode. Others had installed
Windows Vista in drive D and they reinstalled it to drive C and solved the
problem. But some of us went crazy trying to fix the problem and nothing
seemed to work. This is how I fix it.
I got rid of that copy of Windows Vista and install one that is natively
“English”. I used the same serial number that came with my Spanish copy of
the OS and activation was not a problem, all OK. After that I updated the
system and after all updates were installed, (yes, DreamScene too) I rebooted
the system and downloaded via Windows Update the Spanish language pack that I
needed. Installation didn´t fail or anything.
I give this advice because many people like me got a new computer with
Windows Vista pre-installed. And by “pre-installed” I mean that the company
that sold that PC maybe used a personalized installation and the OS just
wasn’t the same after installation. Maybe that´s the reason why the language
pack was impossible to install.
So, three simple steps:
Get an English copy of Vista
Use your own cd key
Install the language pack of your preference
GET Ultimate Extras and updates soon as they become available (English
versions gets updates and extras sooner than other languages). Obviously only
Ultimate Edition can get Ultimate extras, if you don´t have Ultimate, just
don´t try.
