From what I gather (and guess) the KB885250 update could have some system
driver level incompatibilities with other hardware on your system. Wiping
things out and starting clean was a good first step, but I wouldn't apply the
KB885250 patch. If you are behind a firewall of some type just block the
various Microsoft networking ports (UDP and TCP 137, 138, 139, 445, etc.) and
you should be okay.
