My computer will only run in safe mode

Hi There, can anyone help, I am running XPProfessional service pack 2

After my last automatic update and allowing my computer to close down as
per the prompts - when I reboot it will only reboot in safe mode.

How do I find out which update has caused the problem and uninstall it or
how do I load the drivers or services one by one from safe mode to locate the
problem.

I have tried System Restore and Last Known Configuration, but it has no
effect - it still starts in safe mode.

Regards & Thanks
Roger

Have you found a solution - I have one doing the same thing.

Roger,

Using System Restore and rolling the system back to just prior to when
the updates were installed *should* have replaced any system files
updated or replaced by an update.
One can also used Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel to view the
Install dates of the updates.
Since you specify that it was " my last automatic update ", check there
to see what the last update was, and uninstall it while in Safe Mode.

If there was more then one update installed, suggest you uninstall them
one at a time, restarting the system between each uninstall to determine
which one caused this issue.

Hi Mow

I've just tried all that and it still only boots in safe mode. I used to do
my updates manually and purposely didn't update NET Framework. I suspect it
has done that one when I turned automatic on and that is causing the problem.
When I was browsing through for answers to my problem I found an article on
uninstalling it manually, but I can't find it again. Please can you direct me
to it

You're welcome, Roger. .NET Framework updates are listed in ARP
separately from XP updates. IOW, they would show as
'MS .NET Framework x.x Hotfix(KBxxxxxx)', where the x's represent the
version of .NET and the KB article that identifies which update(s) are
installed.

It 'sounds' as though a driver update is the most likely culprit behind
the booting to Safe Mode issue. Suggest you enable Boot Logging to
determine if this is the case: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

Enable Boot Logging is one of the options presented on the Boot menu
when pressing F8 to reach Safe Mode.

Hi Mow,

I'm a bit new to this, but hope I'll learn quickly and would appreciate it
if you can continue to help. I'm in New Zealand, please can you tell me which
time zone you are in so I don't keep looking for a reply when you're asleep.

I've turned boot logging on and now have a 15 page file which I've printed
out, with approx 95% of drivers not loaded.

The ones not loaded only give a description though and not the driver name.

Can I now load the drivers one by one manually and see which crashes the PC
(and how do I do that if it is possible), or is there a quicker way of
finding out which one isn't working<

Thanks again for your help

Regards
Roger

Roger

Have you checked in MSConfig General Tab if Normal StartUp is deselected and that not Diagnostic Start Up is selected in it's place

Mow,
I have the same problem where an automatic update ran the other night
(Tuesday?), now my XP computer won't boot... it sits at the XP logo and
progress bar "spins" but it never boots. I can hard power down, restart in
safe mode okay but I've picked restore points over a week ago and nothing
changes. I haven't installed anything new for months, so it's nothing I've
installed lately. I tried going into add/remove programs but I don't see any
of the MS fixpacks listed in there. Then I saw this post about "Enable Boot
Logging", but when I look at the ntbtlog.txt file, what should I look for?
It lists hundreds of drivers that are not loaded... how do I know which if
any are at fault?

I'll keep checking back, it would be nice to have a working computer again.
Thnx,

Hi Peter,

Yes thanks for the tip , I have, - It is set to normal

However if I try to run diagnostic mode it gives me an "Access Denied
........." error ans says I should log in as Administrator, but I am an
administrator and just to make sure I've checked my user status.

Do you have any ideas about checking out which driver isn't working?

Can you log onto the system in Safe Mode in the Administrator Account ?
As to the boot log ... you need to see which driver is causing an error,
not which drivers are not being loaded. Most of the drivers are not
loaded in SM.

Suggest that when the System is in Safe Mode that you check the Event
Viewer to see if there any specific Error messages.
Once in Safe Mode go to Start > Run > type in

eventvwr.msc

Click OK
Click on System in the left frame.
Look for Errors in the right frame when the system was booting up.
Hopefully, we'll find a clue there.
When you find errors, they can be copied from the System event viewer by
clicking the file icon button under the up and down arrows.
[BTW, I'm on the West Coast of the US, on Pacific Daylight Savings Time]
