My contacts receive empty messages

Using version 9 on Vista Home Premium
when I send an instant message to an online contact the contact receives an
empty line in the conversation window.
I receive everything correct and I can type messeges but they don't seem to
pass

Usually in these situations, it's usually just hidden from them for some reason. For
instance, are you using the same language as them, a standard font (try Arial as a test), and
a normal colour (aka, not white)?

I left all this standard. And we both use dutch
My contact sees the closing period of the message at the left of the line so
aparently nothing is hidden
