Might anyone be able to tell me why my Control Panel items have disappeared,
and what I can do to get them back? I haven't made any changes to the
computer except to install some games. I noticed the missing items today,
but I haven't done anything to the computer today.

Try this:
1) Launch services.msc from a run command
2) Find the SLUNotify service & stop it
3) Find the Software Licensing service & stop it (it may say that ReadyBoost
needs that service to run; stop it anyway)
4) Restart both services, starting with Software Licensing

Hi Steve,

You might try this solution to see if it will help you.

'Icons are missing from Control Panel, or you cannot start Control
Panel, the Welcome Center, or games in Windows Vista'
