I suspect the laser used for read/write of CD's has died. There are
separate lasers in the drive for the two types of disks.
The solution is to buy a new drive, unfortunately. But these are getting
cheaper all the time - under $100 for good quality, well known brands.
To repair the drive would cost more than a new one probably, if indeed the
drive is repairable at all.
