'My Documents', 'Computer' won't stay open

Whenever I try to open up a window through the Start menu or from a
desktop icon or Launchy to view a folder like 'My Documents' or
'Computer', or even 'Control Panel', the window opens for about two
seconds before closing. And then the whole screen goes blank but for
the desktop background and slowly reappears. What's the story, there?
How do I remedy this? I want to be able to peruse my folders! I want
to be able to adjust my screen's resolution! Why won't the windows stay
open for me?

Sounds like you have events turned off and Windows Explorer is having an
error and having to restart. However, since you have error messages
turned off, you are not being notified that the program has stopped
working and needs to be restarted...so it does it for you.

But... but... how do I fix all this? If I get events turned on (and ho
would I go about that?) , would the error tell me how to fix it

Try making a new user profile, and see if it does the same in that.

We had exactly the same problem. The cause - a Dell "multimedia" USB
keyboard! Any computer we attached this kbd to gave that problem. With a
regular keyboard they were fine.

Do you realize that you've told us nothing about your computer and its
recent history? In order to give you focused help, please answer these
questions:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If you know the computer is clean and the change was sudden - and you can't
figure out what you did just before the change so you can reverse that
action - do a System Restore to when things worked. You may need to:

1. Go into Safe Mode to run the System Restore
2. Boot with your Vista DVD to run the System Restore.
