My DVD Player cannot read DVD's

I own a Dell computer and it has two DVD drives, one is a DVD RW drive and
the other is a DVD rom.

Up until yesterday afternoon my rom drive would read dvd's perfectly but one
I was waching a DVD an error message came up saying that the drive could not
read my DVD anymore. I then took out the disc and tried another one, however
the drive seems to only be reading CD's now and not DVD's.

I have followed Windows troubleshooter instructions for the device and have
even tried rolling back or updating the drivers but it says that it cannot
update it because I have the most current version on it, and that there are
no previous drivers to roll back to.

I am finding this very stressful and having asked several people they
suggested to me that i could try and use a DVD lense cleaner, because DVD
drives have two lasers (one for CD's, the other for DVDs) and it could be the
DVD lense that it just dirty. however I cannot clean the lense because the
drive does not recognise the DVD disc.

I really would appreciate any links or advice anyone could provide me with.
I have also not been able to try the other solution i think the problem may
have been related to - searching the manufacturers site for driver updates.
Given that my computer was bought through dell I did not recieve any driver
CD's with the computer for this piece of hardware, and do not know the
manufacturer - I have however noticed that when i go into my computer the
device is named as DVD Drive (D) but when I click it, the details screen is
saying "CD Drive"

any suggestions would be much appreciated

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your DVD/CD-ROM
drive, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your DVD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the DVD Drive.

Thanks, I have tried this and Windows re-installed the device but it still
will not read my dvd discs. If i go into My computer it just says "Please

You need software to read the DVD so maybe it got corrupted. The software
should have come on the CD with the drive.

I have re-booted my computer to it's factory settings in the hope that this
would restore the drive to its original state but there seems to be no luck.
I dont think I got any discs with these drives once I purchased the computer
from Dell - Any ideas of where I could look/ try
