Hi, I just put a dvd into my computer and it refuses to read the disk, there
is nothing wrong with the dvd.
I opened the device manager, and I had that yellow exclaimation mark on my
_NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A drive, I have now uninstalled the drive, but can't
remember how to fix the problem.

I had this problem not so long ago and posted a question on here, a lovely
lady named Patty solved it for me.
Trouble is I can't remember how to solve it now, I'm silly, I should've
taken down notes and kept them, if someone can please help me get my DVD
Rewriter drive working again without any problems, I PROMISE I'll write it
down this time. :-\

First, in addition to the fact that there is a yellow exclamation point, there should be an error code listed, as well. THat would be helpful in troubleshooting your problem.

To remove and reinstall the drive, reconnect the device in the computer and boot up. Go to Device Manager and locate the DVD drive. Right click the item and select Uninstall. Reboot the computer. The drive will be redetected on startup.

If this doesn't correct the problem, you may need to do a little work in the Registry. First, go back to Device Manager and locate the DVD drive item and double click it. Go to the Details tab. In the drop down box, select Device Instance ID and highlight what you see in the box below. Press CTRL-C to copy this to the clipboard. Close this dialog and when you're back in Device Manager, uninstall the device.

Now, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\DeviceClasses\{1186654d-47b8-48b9-beb9-7df113ae3c67}

Click Edit, Find and press CTRL-V. This will paste the device info into the find dialog. Click Ok. When you find the entry that matches this device, right click the sub key and select Export. This creates a backup, just in case. Then you can right click the sub-key and select Delete. Note: You may have more than one sub-key that isn't an exact match. For example, mine is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\DeviceClasses\{1186654d-47b8-48b9-beb9-7df113ae3c67}\##?#IDE#CdRom_NEC_DVD_RW_ND-3520A____________________1.04____#5&216482f0&0&0.0 .0#{1186654d-47b8-48b9-beb9-7df113ae3c67}

With 3 others that are close, but not exact. You can delete the other entries, just make sure you export them first.

Now, reboot. The drive should be redetected and the drivers installed. If not, post back with the error code that device manager shows for the drive.

Hi Doug,
I tried your solution, but I must have done something wrong. This is new
territory for me. I have the same problem as Nad. Error Code 41. Your
instructions mention removing and reinstalling the drive. I uninstalled it,
but I never opened the computer and unconnected/connected it. Is that
required? Also, when you say to "export" to create a backup, where do you
export it to and do you have to give it a file name? I exported the subkeys
but I didn't delete them because I was worried I would lose them if I did
something wrong. Do you have to do anything with them after you export them?
