Hi guys

I got a DELL XPS M1530, which came with a WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT1
298.0GB Hard Drive Disk when I bought it. My computer got some problems
so DELL changed the HDD(which had a block failing) for me, and put in
FUJITSU MHZ2320BH G2 298.09GB instead. My computer is owkring faste
than before and the problems that I had have all gone(like a
eventviewer problem I had for a time ago), but my HDD now seems to mak
very much "fan noise", and somtimes the clik....clickclickclick... thin
and very loud, or at least I think that. Am I just a bit to fuzy wit
the sound or am I right??

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie
value="http://www.youtube.com/v/S7762YVdCjM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><para
name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><para
name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embe
src="http://www.youtube.com/v/S7762YVdCjM&hl=en&fs=1
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always
allowfullscreen="true" width="425

Thanks for your opinion

That's kinda loud.
Get a diagnostic utility from Fujitsu:
http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/c...utilities.html

Run it on your notebook and see what it says about your HD.

To be honest what you consider 'loud' the manufacturer might consider as
normal for that drive. I well remember being sent a hard drive by Seagate to
review. The drive seemed quite quiet in operation for the first few days but
got progressively louder as the week progressed. I called Seagate and
expressed my concerns and was told 'don't worry about the noise, that is
normal.' Well it must have been normal because the drive lasted 5 years
without any problem and it was only dispensed with because I left
instructions for the PC to be sent to the recycling centre (I was buying a
new one) and forgot to take the damn drive out:-(

The best thing to do is visit the manufacturer's website and download their
drive diagnostic application. Run it on the drive and see if it shows any
problems. It is rather disconcerting the loudness of the click, click as the
drive head accesses data, but without a diagnostic check it is difficult to
say whether the drive is faulty or not.

SMART is not always reliable. Did you see the YouTube video? If I had a
hard drive making noises like that (and I have), I would back it up as soon
as possible and replace it.

Yes, let's hope the next one isn't as noisy.

I Agree SMART isn't all that reliable and No I didn't see the YouTube video;
I rarely click on links within newsgroup/forum posts.

Manufacturer's have far better diagnostic tools than SMART. If you have to
return your hard drive to, say the retail outlet that you purchased it from,
the first thing they do, after the smug grin and the 'I don't believe you'
look, is to run the relevant manufacturer's drive diagnostic software.

The manufacturers' disk diagnostic software all check the SMART data, even
for SCSI, SAS and FC disks sometimes. There is no other magic data that
they access. It does not even matter which manufacturer's diag program you
use most of the time, but some companies use different data values, so you
might as well, to be sure, as they might not cover the whole superset. The
only other thing that disk diag programs do are sector by sector read and
write tests.

The video was of a drive that was clearly failing, and if you watched it,
you'd agree. While SMART does not always catch failing disks in time, it
does work pretty well, and I reckon that the diags would most certainly find
bad blocks on that disk, anyway.

Oh another thing, the OP should check the external link at the bottom of
this page, and listen to the recordings, and he'll realise how close he is
to total disk failure:

SMART only finds 64% of failing disks in time, so you cannot rely on it. If
you use the disk diag software again closer to the time of failure you will
find a rapidly increasing amount of bad blocks on the extended test, judging
from my experience.
